Interview with @moniqueschreiber on her experience with acne

by Tommi Skin

We love learning more about our communities skin journey and discussing the impact it has within our lives. We asked Monique from @moniqueschreiber about her experience with acne, heres what she had to say!

How did you start your acne positivity journey?
Growing up I never struggled with skin issues, but in my mid-twenties my acne flared up really badly. I felt so lost and so isolated with what I was going through, until I started finding other creators on Instagram sharing their stories about living with acne. I felt liberated to share my story too, and that’s how my page became an acne positive one! I have learnt so much about acne and skincare, and really feel strongly about empowering those with skin problems. It is nothing to hide or be ashamed of!

What are your main skin concerns?
I mainly have acne scars and pigmentation. My breakouts are almost non-existent since using Accutane.

What has having acne taught you?
It’s taught me to love every part of myself, even the parts that the world tell me are unlovable. Acne has freed me from believing that I need to fit into the perfect mould of what society has created and deemed as beautiful, and what that looks like. Acne has also taught me so much patience and kindness. It has shown me what it means to persevere and never give up on myself.

Acne scars are a huge part of having acne; do you have any advice for dealing with them?
Although I am still learning to love and accept my scars, they are a part of me and they tell the story of what I have been through. Treating acne scars is a very personal decision that one needs to make on your own. I personally have treated with specific skincare as well as going for laser treatment. I have also learnt that it is possible to love your scars! Don’t let society tell you that you aren’t worthy just because of your skin. We are all beautiful and have something special to share with the world.
